Intro

Green Basil Restaurant, a family owned Thai restaurant located in Burnaby, BC. Me and my team were tasked with redesigning their website to help cater to their fundamentally changing customer base post-pandemic.

The Problem

Garnering key insights from GB and their customer base, I determined the customer-bases we needed to shift our design focus toward. These were the key findings :

Map Directory Icon

Nearby Office Workers

As workers transition back to a in-person work schedule, we needed to entice their once most prominent customer base back to GB.

Icon of a Document

Dine-In Patrons

To grow this audience, we needed to design the website to frame GB as a upscaled night-time dining destination.

Icon of an Email

Takeout and Delivery

GB’s most prominent customer base, they needed a concise directory to GB’s delivery and takeout services

Research

I conducted precedent research looking at how upscaled restaurants designed their websites to showcase their food, ambiance and ethos. These were my key findings:

Photography First

Striking food, drink and interior photos created memorability.

Concise Navigation

Key pages were always easy to navigate within 2 clicks.

Refined Colour Palettes

Primary + Tonal colours created an elegant look.

Solution

Presenting, the re-designed Green Basil website! Visit it today at greenbasilrestaurant.ca. We first created wireframes before shifting to high-fidelity mock-ups designing in Figma. Following usability testing of the prototypes, we revised our mock-ups as the website was developed.

Reflection

After implementation, the site was able to garner 10,000+ unique visits. This was my first UX/UI website project with a real-world client and I was able to garner many new skillsets such as cross-communication between me and the web developers, creating design systems and component libraries from scratch, and conducting usability testing.
